The International Sreekrishna Kendram (ISK), conceptualized by the Balagokulam, is in fact a model village offering an opportunity to the public and specially to the children to learn about India 's unique heritage and culture as well the message of Lord Krishna, in the company of their parents. The village is coming up in central Kerala, about 5kms off the Cochin-Thrissur National Highway on the slopes of the western Ghats with all its serenity and natural bounties. The Balagokulam, basically a cultural organisation with its roots spread in India and abroad, has been in the service of children updating them on the Hindu philosophy and culture. The ISK is an ambitious project of the Balasamskara Kendra, a charitable trust registered under the Balagokulam. Balagokulam believes that following the teachings of Lord Krishna alone is capable of controlling and regulating the destiny of the universe. This faith has prompted them to form a centre viz. the ISK - where full opportunity will be provided to the public to learn of the many facets of the illustrious life of Lord Sreekrishna. Providing a centre of learning, particularly of the cultural history of India is the main object of the project, so that a visit to ISK will be a solace from the tribulations of the world, transcending a wave of mental peace on the visitor.
The importance of Guruvayur and Sabarimala as renowned pilgrim centres cannot be underscored. Similarly the importance of Kochi as an international commercial centre and Thrissur as the cultural capital of Kerala are facts unquestionable. About 5kms off the National Highway connecting these two cities will take you to the slopes of the Sahya mountain ranges adorned with blissful scenic beauty. The Sreekrishna temple coming up there, will provide an opportunity to the visitor to have a darsan of Lord Krishna in his childhood days. The idol to be installed will be in black stone (Krishnasila) depicting Sreekrishna blessing and offering butter as prasada to the devotees.
The main gate of the complex takes one to the circular foregrounds of the temple beautifully laid with marbles and black stones. You enter the temple from the holy courtyards, which is again in a circular shape with an architectural symmetry. The first floor of the temple block resting on Cylindrical pillars houses the sanctum sanctorum, with the Lord giving darsan of salvation. The temple is accessible from any direction. The Lord in his boyhood stature gives darsan blessing the devotees with a smiling face offering butter as prasada by his right hand while holding a butter filled urn on the other hand.
One is at liberty to offer pooja to suit his own customs and rituals. After offering pooja, the devotee can relax on the sprawling lawns of the temple premises or visit the other projects of the ISK in the vicinity.
The steps from the first floor leads you to a circular exhibition hall offering a visual feast of mural paintings depicting various episodes of Krishna's life. On the top floor you get darsan of all powerful Sun God with his thousand rays surrounded by the Navagrahas, the holy nine planets. Once you return to the ground floor you are over-powered by a transcendental spirit and feel absolutely free from all mental weights of tension and worries.
The right side of the main causeway will house different sales counters, bookshops stationary and medical shops etc. A centre for distributing temple prasadam and the ayurvedic preparations from milk and cow products will be special attraction.
Added to all these will be a fair priced canteen to cater to the requirements of the devotees and visitors with its one wing earmarked as a cloakroom for visitors. Registration of all the visitors at the main gate will be compulsory and their visit to particular units will be on the strength of visitors pass only.
Behind this shopping complex is the Veda Vijhnana Kendram where one could learn of the ancient Indian culture. There will be adequate facilities for vedic research, reference studies and also discussion with scholars on vedic references. The unit will have a sound library having authoritative reference books on Hindu culture, heritage etc. The assistance of scholars will always be available for guidance. A separate wing in the premises will provide accomodation for scholars to stay and pursue their research studies. The fact that a senior curator will be in charge of the centre will adequately bring out the importance of this centre in the ISK complex.
Cows were an integral part of Krishna 's life, particularly that in Ambadi, where Krishna spent his childhood. Ever since they have been associated with the Hindu cult, human civilization and his social life. Evenwhile deriving many boons, they are dealt with most cruelly and mean men do not think twice before sending them to the slaughter houses once he finds them less productive. To reverse this trend and to reestablish a place for cows in human life, a model Gosala will be set up in the ISK campus, where cows of different genes are cared by experts. While milk and milk products cater to the needs of the other units, rare ayurvedic medicines are prepared from specially reared cows and their products, which is a very special to this centre. 'Caring the cow is worshiping the God' is the message spread with a call to each household to rear atleast one cow if possible. All assistance will be rendered by the centre.
You will enjoy the herbal garden adjoining the Gosala, where medicinal indecisively herbs of exemplary values are grown. The natural environment in which the rare medicinal plants are grown will be a visual feast, not only to the laymen, but also to the botanists and researchers. As you enjoy the breeze with medicinal scents, you get invigorated. Those who feel like growing some of these plants at home could definitely seek assistance from the experts on planting methods, availability of seedlings etc. We are sure, that such a purified and serene atmosphere will be one most ideal for meditation and facilities are available for the same. You will envy to witness many in such a transcendental state for hours together. It is no wonder that the Jain Sadhus had selected these very same places for observing penance and poojas centuries back.
A botanical garden housing the 'star trees' would offer opportunity to each family to see for themselves their star trees and worship them and also rest under them. The idea is to provide an opportunity to the public to understand the importance of nature and educate them of the importance of trees in human life and how its worship would free him from the sins of cruelty done knowingly or unknowingly.
The ISK expect to provide more facilities depending on the financial capabilities, like adding more and more units of specialised nature.
Beyond the Main gate from the road, either side of the compound walls will have smaller gates. The left side gate will take you to the administrative block housing the different administrative heads of each individual units, besides a Conference hall for the executive committee to meet, and also rooms for the chairman and other senior office bearers. The ground floor will have the enquiry and reception desks with a long hall for visitors to wait and rest.
An executive committee elected by the ISK general body and Balasamskara kendra, will be in charge of the apex administration. Besides the chairman, general secretary and treasurer, the apex body will have three vice presidents with experience in administration and speciality subjects to co-ordinate the administrative requirements. The committee will also have expert members from various fields. There will also be an advisory body of eminent personalities in society to advise the executive committee on policy matters. The present executive committee functioning in the administrative office at Ernakulam will hold charge of the apex administrative functions until the elected executive committee as mentioned above assume office.
